About The Book
Camouflaged Killer is a book that was born of necessity.
Over the years, while working as an investigator I had to embed myself in some very dangerous places and deal with some very questionable people -- including those involved in religious cults and satanic organizations. In so doing, I’ve always relied upon my training, my experience, and my good judgment to keep me from harm’s way - and it has rarely let me down.
But on one brisk May afternoon in 2010, my own senses betrayed me. As I looked into Colonel Russell Williams’s steely bluish-gray eyes, I felt no sense of evil. No threat whatsoever. And it was that lack of demonic presence that I found most unnerving and unsettling. Standing before me, after all, was a man - not a monster - who, even after being exposed as one of the continent’s most discreet and vicious serial predators, still managed to fly under the radar of people trained to detect such deceit.
Compelled to explore my own failings, I set out to learn more about the evil that had fooled me. I needed to understand the dynamics that allowed a man, who had committed such unconscionable acts, to look me straight in the eye and present as so damn normal. That’s when I realized that I had to write this book.
I began to research not only Williams’s terrible crimes, and his seemingly uneventful childhood, but also his twisted psychological state. To take the terrifying leap into the mind of this serial sex killer, I solicited the assistance of some of North America’s most noted experts on the criminal mind – including forensic psychiatrists and FBI and RCMP criminal profilers. It would take several months of dedicated research to gain the type of understanding that I sought, and to seek answers for the many questions that begged to be asked, such as:
- Why was Williams willing to risk it all - career, prestige, and family - to rape and kill?
- How was he able to lead a double life and fly under everyone's radar?
- What caused his perverted and sadistic behaviors?
- Why did he start his crime spree at such a late age? What was the trigger?
- Did porn play a role in fueling his desires?
- What disorders did he suffer from?
- Was he a psychopath? A pedophile?
- How did his "level of evil" compare with that of other noted serial killers?
- Could Williams have been treated?
What I learned along my journey was both interesting and deeply disturbing. I have dedicated a good portion of the book specifically to the psychological analysis of this most unusual offender (please note that the Irish and UK editions do not contain this section).
I found it necessary to reveal the disturbing details that answer the WHAT? (the gruesome details of Williams’s attacks and perverted behaviors) in order to then address the HOW? and the WHY? (by analyzing his motivations and behaviors). By so doing, the reader will find that Camouflaged Killer is, quite simply, the most complete and comprehensive tome available on Williams and his despicable crimes available anywhere.
I hope that you will accompany me on my journey by picking up a copy of Camouflaged Killer and choosing to explore with me this most unusual of criminal minds.
